• Record the temperature each day using a thermometer (reading scales). At the end of the week make a simple bar graph.
• Record the temperature and time over a period of hours. Discuss the different ways of recording time (12hr/24hr). Collate the data into a table with appropriate headings.
• Use a ruler or measuring tape then record the various depths of snow around the house. Discuss cm and metres.
• Time how long it takes to sledge between 2 set points. Record the results in a table. Look for ways to go faster!
• Give your child a fantasy £150 to spend on a theme. Examples could be winter clothing, games or technology. They must make a list of the items they want to buy and use a calculator to add up their total. How close can they get to £150? This can be done using catalogues or the Internet.
• Bake cookies or a cake. Have your child measure out the ingredients using scales and a measuring jug. Let them time the baking.
• Use a calendar. How many days until…a birthday, holiday, event etc.
• Make your own calendar. Add a picture or thought for the day.
• Print or draw symmetrical patterns to form snowflakes.
• Try some curved stitching. Patterns are easily available on the internet. P4 and above.
• Sort out toys in to groups. Match toys by colour or weight. P1-3
• Play a board game, Uno or a game of cards. These can help counting skills with younger pupils.

• Primary 1 and 2 could be encouraged to think of winter words which begin with a particular sound/letter. Draw them and decorate.
• Draw a winter scene and write about it.
• Go for a walk in the snow. Discuss what you can see, hear, feel and smell. When you return home write down your discussion in a poem. “In Winter I feel…, In Winter I hear...”etc. On returning home you could have a hot drink and snack. They can then use taste!
• Write an acrostic poem about winter, where the first letter of each sentence forms a winter word.
• Watch the news reports. Make notes on the main facts and report them back. Some children may also want to write a script and present their own news story!
• Write an imaginative story, perhaps a paragraph a day. Themes could include being snowed in, the big sledge race, the magical snowman, the snowball fight…the list is endless.This could also be achieved in the form of a spoken story. Why not tape this and share it with others.
• Write a list of instructions. An example could be ‘How to build a snowman’.
• 10-20 minutes reading depending on age. Children could be encouraged to make up a quiz about the pages they have read. Older children could examine the vocabulary used and predict the rest of the story.

• Synonym challenge. Give you child a word and see how many new words, with similar meanings, they can think of. Happy = glad, pleased content.

• Write a review of a movie or book. Include; Title, Author, Main Characters, Plot, Star Rating 1-5, Would you recommend the book/movie?

• Look at a map or globe. Can you find countries which start with every letter of the alphabet and their capital city?
• Research where birds migrate to. Find these places on a map or use Google Earth to look at these countries.
• Find the coldest place in Scotland, Britain, Europe and finally the World.
• Make up your own weather report.
• Make a model using K’Nex, Lego, junk or anything at hand. Write instructions for someone else to build it. The model could be winter based (sledge or snow mobile)
